What years did you attend HSA?
I started attending HSA in 1995 and eventually got a job as a camp counselor until 2003.
What classes did you take?
Darryl Durham gave me my first “professional”clarinet. I studied privately, orchestra, and chamber music all under his guidance. I also got to travel to various places around the world because of an exchange program created by Mr. Durham. He made it possible to show talent and travel, we were treated like little professionals.
What college did you attend? Major?
I received my BFA in Jazz Saxophone and Composition at the New School University in New York City.
Performances, productions?
I’ve performed with Latin Singer Adela Dalto, Robert Glasper, Legendary Alto Saxophonist James Spaulding, Latin Percussionist Louis Bauso and Patato Valdes, JJ Hairston And Youthful Praise, Jay-Z, Kanye West, Slim thug, George Michaels, The Roots Monica, Keri Hilson, Marsha Ambrosius, Fantasia, Ledisi,Kelly Price, Jill Scott, VV Brown, as well as many others. I've also recorded with Destiny’s Child, DJ Mark Ronson, Mobb Deep, 50 Cent, Trumpeter/Producer Keyon Harrold and KeyKat Productions, to name a few.
In 2006, Beyonce Knowles held auditions for an all female band. I was one of 1000 girls who auditioned and was handpicked by Beyonce herself. Since then, I’ve recorded The Beyonce Experience tour and the I...Am tour (with a feature solo on both DVD’s), plus numerous TV appearances which include: Oprah,Ellen DeGeneres, Today Show, Good Morning America, Tyra Banks, Bet Awards,Black Girls Rock Awards, American Music Awards, Fashion Rocks, Grammy's, andthe World Music Awards.
What projects are you currently working on?
I am currently on tour with Beyonce and working on my solo project, Mockery. “Mockery” features incredible tracks produced by KeyKat Productions.
What did you learn from HSA?
The teachers gave all they had to their students. They wanted the children to be better than them. They taught us to push and give all we have.
Any advice for current HSA Students?
Always stay true to yourself and your craft. If you love what you do and you work hard to achieve it, nothing is impossible. Always give 150% more than what you think is required, don't only do what you're taught. Love what you do, it will show!
How did HSA change your life?
The teachers at the Harlem School of the Arts changed my life by showing me you have to love what you do. Walking in everyday, i felt inspired.
